The Best Infant Car Seat
This is the one purchase you cannot leave the hospital without, and the one where the differences are real. Every seat sold in the US meets the same federal standard, so this table is not about which is safest — it is about which one you can carry, install correctly every time, and click onto the stroller you already chose.
Two numbers do most of the deciding. The carrier weight is what you actually lift, with a baby in it, several times a day; the spread below is nearly four pounds. And stroller compatibility is either direct or by adapter, which sounds trivial until you are doing it one-handed in a parking garage.
Every figure in the table comes from the manufacturer's own product page, numbered and linked at the end. Where a maker does not publish a number, the cell is blank rather than filled from somewhere else.
One seat is missing on purpose. Graco's SnugRide is the obvious budget option, but their site refuses automated access, so we could not read its figures from the source we hold everything else to. We would rather leave it out than publish numbers we have not verified; it goes in the day we can check them.

Who it's for. The lightest carrier here by a wide margin — 6.2 lb against 9 to 10 for everything else — and the one to buy if you take taxis, because Nuna states it installs with a vehicle seat belt and no base at all. The stability leg telescopes, so it fits deep footwells other legs bottom out in.
Skip it if you do not own Nuna strollers and would rather not buy adapters, or you want the longest possible run before the convertible seat: it stops at 30 lb and 30 inches, the tightest limits in this table.
The lightest carrier here by a wide margin, and it installs with just a seat belt for taxis.

Who it's for. The value pick, and the one your baby stays in longest: 35 lb and 32 inches are the most generous limits here, at $229.99. It carries an integrated anti-rebound bar, and Chicco publishes both a LATCH and a seat-belt path plus European routing for carrier-only installs.
Skip it if weight matters more to you than months of use — at 10 lb the carrier is the heaviest in this table, and you will notice it on a supermarket run.
The one that fits the biggest baby for the longest, at half the price of the boutique seats.

Who it's for. If your stroller is a Vista or a Cruz, this is the obvious answer: it attaches directly, no adapter to buy or lose. The LATCH is auto-retracting, which is UPPAbaby's answer to the most common installation error — a strap left slack — and the fabric is stated free of flame-retardant chemicals.
Skip it if you own a different stroller. Bought on its own it is a good seat with an unremarkable spec sheet; bought alongside a Vista it is the whole reason the system works.
Clicks straight onto a Vista or Cruz with no adapter, and the LATCH retracts itself so you cannot leave it slack.

Who it's for. The install-proof one. Rigid-LATCH means the base bolts to the anchors instead of hanging off a strap, and the metal load leg adjusts through 13 positions. Clek publishes a 9-year expiration — the longest stated here — and states the fabrics are flame-retardant-free and PFAS-free. With Maxi-Cosi adapters it fits the widest range of strollers in this table.
Skip it if the budget matters: at $499.99 it is more than twice the Chicco, and the 17 lb base makes it the one you least want to move between cars.

- Start from the stroller, not the seat. A direct attachment is one click; an adapter is a part to buy, fit and lose. If you have already chosen a stroller, that decision has probably made this one for you.
- The carrier weight is the number you will feel. Between the lightest and heaviest here is nearly four pounds, before the baby, and you will lift it several times a day for a year.
- If you live somewhere you take taxis, check the baseless install. All four seats here publish a European belt path so the carrier can go in without the base — that is not true of every seat on the market.
- A load leg or an anti-rebound bar limits how far the seat rotates in a crash. The seats here differ in which they use, and the manufacturers describe them differently; read the page, not the marketing.
- Infant seats expire. Clek states nine years; the others do not publish a period on their product pages, so check the date stamped on the shell before you accept a hand-me-down.
- Whatever you buy, install it and get it checked before your due date. Fire stations and many hospitals do this free, and most seats are installed wrong on the first attempt — that matters far more than which of these four you picked.
